How the math works

Mental shortcuts help when you’re checking the result: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left, 20% is double that, and 15% is 10% plus half of it. On a $60 bill, that gives $6.00, $12.00 and $9.00.

The tip and tax calculator shows the tip, the tax and the grand total under the per-person amount, so you can check each line against the receipt. Use “Copy summary” to paste the result into a group chat.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20. A quick way in your head: find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. On a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so a 20% tip is $9.00.

Should I tip before or after tax?

There is no single rule; some people tip on the amount before tax and some on the total. This tip calculator tips on the amount before tax. To tip on the after-tax total instead, enter that total as the bill and leave the tax field empty.

How do I split the tip between friends?

Set the number of people. The calculator adds the tip and tax to the bill and divides the total, so each person’s share already includes their part of the tip.

Can I enter a custom tip percentage?

Yes. Use the 0%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% or 25% buttons, or type any tip from 0% to 100% in the custom field.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

Check the bill first. If a service charge is already included, which is common in the UK and some other countries, set the tip to 0% or enter only the extra you want to add.

Is this tip calculator free?

Yes. It is free, runs in your browser and needs no app or signup.
