Split the bill calculator with tax and tip

Example: a $100 bill split 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 ways

A $100 bill with 8% tax ($8.00) and an 18% tip on the pre-tax amount ($18.00) comes to $126.00. Here is what each person pays:

Example: $100 bill, 8% tax, 18% tip
PeopleEach pays
2$63.00
3$42.00
4$31.50
5$25.20
6$21.00

Splitting bills in 4 is the same sum as any other number: the total divided by 4. If the result doesn’t come out to whole cents, the calculator spreads the extra cents so nothing is lost.

How the math works

The total is rounded to the cent first and then divided. If $100.00 is split three ways, two people pay $33.33 and one pays $33.34, so the three shares add up to exactly $100.00. With “Round up” on, everyone pays the next whole amount instead.

When people should pay different amounts, for example someone who only had a drink, use group mode and split the bill by shares or exact amounts. You can also untick anyone who shouldn’t pay for an item at all.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill between 4 people?

Add the tax and tip to the bill, then divide the total by 4. For a $100 bill with 8% tax and an 18% tip, the total is $126.00, so each of the 4 people pays $31.50. The calculator does this for any number of people from 1 to 50.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

Open group / trip mode, add each person and add the bill as an expense split “By shares” or “Exact amounts”. For example, give someone 2 shares if they should pay twice as much as the others.

Is tax included in the split?

Only if you enter it. Type the tax rate in the “Tax %” field when the bill doesn’t already include tax; leave it empty if the total already includes tax.

What happens if the bill doesn’t divide evenly?

Amounts are worked out in whole cents and the leftover cents are spread so the shares add up exactly to the total. Some people may pay 1¢ less. Turn on “Round up” if you prefer everyone to pay a whole amount.

Can I use a currency other than dollars?

Yes. Pick any of the 16 supported currencies, including USD, GBP, EUR, CAD and AUD. Your choice is remembered on this device.

Do I need an app or an account?

No. The split the bill calculator runs in your browser, works on phones and computers, and needs no signup.
