Split rent between roommates evenly or by shares

Example: $2,400 rent between 3 roommates

Example: $2,400 monthly rent, 3 roommates
RoommateEven splitBy shares (4 : 3 : 3)
Roommate 1 (larger room)$800.00$960.00
Roommate 2$800.00$720.00
Roommate 3$800.00$720.00
Total$2,400.00$2,400.00

In the shares column the group agreed that the larger room is worth 4 shares and the other two rooms 3 shares each. That makes 10 shares of $240.

How the math works

Amounts are worked out in whole cents, and any leftover cents go to some of the roommates so the total matches the rent exactly. For example, $1,000 split three ways is $333.34, $333.33 and $333.33.

How to split rent fairly is something each household decides. Common reasons to use shares instead of an even split are a bigger bedroom, a private bathroom or a parking space. Agree on the shares together, then enter them here so the numbers are clear for everyone. For shared bills on top of the rent, open group mode from the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split rent evenly?

Divide the monthly rent by the number of roommates. For $2,400 between 3 roommates, each pays $800 a month. Enter the rent and the number of roommates above to see it instantly.

How do I split rent by room size?

Agree on a number of shares for each person, for example more shares for a bigger room or a private bathroom, then turn on “Split by agreed shares”. Each person pays rent × their shares ÷ all shares. The calculator does not measure rooms itself; the shares are up to your group.

Can shares be decimals?

Yes. Shares can have up to two decimal places, for example 1.5, and can be anything from 0 to 1,000.

Can I split utilities and other bills too?

Yes. Use group mode to add the electricity, internet, groceries or a deposit as separate expenses, each with the person who paid it, and the tool works out who owes whom.

Does it work for flatmates and housemates?

Yes. Roommates, flatmates and housemates all split rent the same way. Pick your currency, such as GBP, AUD or CAD, from the list.

Is my rent information saved anywhere?

No. The rent split is calculated in your browser and is not saved or sent anywhere. If you change the currency, only that choice is remembered on this device.
