How to split the bill

  1. Enter the bill total as it appears on the check, before any tip.
  2. Pick a tip: 0%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25% or type your own. Add the tax rate if the bill doesn’t already include it.
  3. Set the number of people. Each person’s share updates as you type.
  4. Turn on “Round up” if you’d rather everyone paid a whole number of dollars, pounds or euros, then copy the summary into your group chat.

If people ordered very different things, switch to Group / trip mode and add each item as its own expense, ticking only the people who shared it.

Example: splitting a $120 dinner with tax and tip

Four friends have dinner. The food and drinks come to $120, the local sales tax is 8% and they want to leave an 18% tip on the pre-tax amount. (The tax rate here is just an example; use the rate on your own bill.)

Example: $120 dinner, 8% tax, 18% tip, 4 people
LineAmount
Food and drinks (subtotal)$120.00
Tax (8% of $120)$9.60
Tip (18% of $120)$21.60
Total$151.20
Each of 4 people pays$37.80

An uneven split works the same way with shares. If one friend had about twice as much, give them 2 shares and everyone else 1. That makes 5 shares of $30.24: the friend with 2 shares pays $60.48 and the other three pay $30.24 each, which adds back up to $151.20.

Splitting trip and group expenses

Group mode is for anything with more than one payer: a weekend away, a holiday abroad or flatmates sharing a house. Add everyone’s name, then each expense with who paid it, and choose how it’s divided:

Each expense can carry its own tax and tip, and its own currency, with an exchange rate you enter; everything is settled in your main currency. A split holds up to 50 people and 200 expenses.

The whole split is saved in the page address after the #, so “Copy share link” gives you one link that shows the same split to anyone. Your last 10 splits stay on this device under “Recent splits”.

How settle-up works

Instead of paying each other back expense by expense, the tool first works out each person’s net balance: what they paid minus their share of everything. People with a positive balance get money back; people with a negative balance owe it. Because the balances always add up to zero, a group of n people can always settle up in at most n − 1 transfers.

Here is a worked example with four friends who share every cost equally:

Example: four friends, $320 of shared costs
PersonPaidShareNet balance
Alex$200 (hotel)$80+$120
Sam$80 (dinner)$80$0
Maya$40 (taxi)$80−$40
Noa$0$80−$80

Settle-up suggests two transfers: Noa pays Alex $80 and Maya pays Alex $40. Sam is already even. The tool first matches people who owe exactly what someone else is owed, then pairs the largest debt with the largest credit, which gives the fewest transfers in most everyday cases.

Frequently asked questions

What does “split the bill” mean?

To split the bill means to share the cost of a meal, a purchase or another shared expense between several people instead of one person paying for everyone. It can be an even split, where everyone pays the same, or an uneven one, where each person pays for their own part.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Enter the bill total, pick a tip percentage and the number of people. The calculator adds the tip (and tax if you enter it) and shows what each person pays.

Should I tip before or after tax?

This calculator works out the tip on the amount before tax, then adds tax and tip separately. If you prefer to tip on the total including tax, enter the after-tax total as the bill and leave the tax field empty.

How is rounding handled?

Everything is worked out in whole cents. When a total does not divide evenly, the leftover cents go to some of the people so the shares add up exactly to the total, which is why some may pay 1¢ less. With “Round up” turned on, everyone pays the next whole amount, so the total can end up slightly higher than the bill.

Do I need to sign up or install an app?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your split is stored in the link itself and in your browser, never on our servers.

How do I share a split with my group?

In group mode press “Copy share link” and send it. Anyone who opens it sees the same people, expenses and who owes whom.

Can I split expenses in different currencies?

Yes. Add each expense in the currency you paid in and enter the exchange rate once. Everything is settled in your main currency.

How does settle up work?

The calculator works out each person’s net balance and suggests the fewest practical transfers so everyone is even.
