Split the Bill fits best for one-off splits, such as a trip, a dinner or a party, where you don’t want to ask everyone to sign up first. An account-based app may fit better if your group wants a running history synced across everyone’s phones, because Split the Bill has no live sync: each change makes a new link that you send again.

Example: four flatmates settle a month of shared costs

Example: shared costs split equally between 4 flatmates
FlatmatePaidShareNet balance
Jo£84 (groceries)£37+£47
Lee£24 (cleaning supplies)£37−£13
Kim£40 (internet)£37+£3
Pat£0£37−£37

Settle-up: Pat pays Jo £37, Lee pays Jo £10 and Lee pays Kim £3. That’s 3 transfers for 4 people, the n − 1 maximum.

How the math works

Each expense is divided between the people who shared it: equally, by shares or by exact amounts, with optional tax and tip. Each person’s net balance is what they paid minus their share. The tool then matches people who owe exactly what someone else is owed, and pairs the largest debt with the largest credit until everyone is even.

Frequently asked questions

Is Split the Bill free?

Yes. Split the Bill is free to use and has no paid version.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no signup, login or download. You add people and expenses in the browser and share the result as a link.

Can my whole group edit the same split?

Each person who opens the link gets their own copy of the split. If someone adds or changes an expense, they send the updated link back to the group. There is no live sync between devices.

Where is my data stored?

In the share link itself and in your browser’s storage on your device. Nothing is stored on a server and there is no account to delete.

Does it handle different currencies?

Yes. Each expense can be in its own currency, with exchange rates you enter, and everything is settled in one main currency.

Is Split the Bill connected to Splitwise?

No. Split the Bill is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Splitwise.
