How to convert time to decimal hours

Hours and minutes use base 60, but pay is calculated in base 10. To turn a time like 7:45 into something you can multiply by an hourly rate, keep the whole hours and convert only the minutes: divide them by 60.

Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Minutes = (decimal hours − whole hours) × 60

Worked examples

Decimal conversion examples
Time workedCalculationDecimal hours
7:457 + 45 ÷ 607.75
8:208 + 20 ÷ 60 = 8.333…8.33
6:076 + 7 ÷ 60 = 6.1166…6.12
38:3038 + 30 ÷ 6038.50

Going the other way, 7.75 hours is 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 7:45. And 8.33 hours is 0.33 × 60 = 19.8, which rounds to 20 minutes, so 8:20.

Paying from decimal hours

Once your time is in decimal, multiply by the rate. 38:30 at $17.50 an hour is 38.5 × $17.50 = $673.75. Converting each day and then adding can give a slightly different total than adding the minutes first, because of rounding. This site always adds whole minutes first and converts once at the end.

Common mistakes

Rounding to tenths and quarter hours

Some employers record time in tenths of an hour (6-minute blocks) or quarter hours (15-minute blocks) instead of exact minutes. That is rounding, which changes the time itself, not converting. Rounding to the nearest tenth turns 3 to 8 minutes into 0.1 hour; rounding to the nearest quarter hour turns 8:07 into 8:00 and 8:08 into 8:15. Federal rules accept these methods only if, over time, they do not underpay employees for the time they actually work.

The time card calculator can apply 5, 6 or 15-minute rounding to each punch; the exact rule is on how we calculate. When you write times on a paper card, follow how to fill out a time card and record the real minutes.

To get hours worked from clock times first, use the hours calculator. For a week with lunch and overtime, use the time card calculator. UK and Australian readers may prefer the timesheet calculator with 24-hour times.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Round to two decimal places for payroll.

How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60. For 7.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45, so it is 7 hours 45 minutes.

What is 8 hours 20 minutes in decimal?

20 ÷ 60 = 0.333…, which rounds to 0.33, so 8:20 is 8.33 hours.

Why does my payroll use decimals?

Pay is hours times rate, and that multiplication only works with decimal hours. 7:45 × $20 means nothing, but 7.75 × $20 = $155.00.

Is 7.5 hours the same as 7 hours 50 minutes?

No. 7.5 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes. This is the most common time card mistake; always convert minutes by dividing by 60.

What is a tenth of an hour?

Six minutes. Some employers round punches to the nearest tenth (0.1 hour): 1 or 2 minutes rounds to 0, 3 to 8 minutes rounds to 0.1, 9 to 14 minutes rounds to 0.2, and so on.

Can I print the chart?

Yes. Press “Print the minutes chart” to print only the 1–60 minute table, in black on white.
