Weekly time card calculator with lunch breaks
How to use the time card calculator
- Pick the week. Use “This week”, the arrows or “Jump to date”. In Settings choose whether your workweek starts on Sunday or Monday.
- Enter each day. Type the clock-in and clock-out times, such as 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, or 08:00 and 17:00 in 24-hour time. Add the unpaid lunch in minutes.
- Add extra punches if you need them. Split shifts get up to 6 in/out pairs a day. Set the day type to PTO, Holiday or Sick for paid time off.
- Set a rate and overtime rule (optional). Enter your hourly rate and choose an overtime rule to see regular, overtime and gross pay.
- Print, export or share. Print a signable card, save it as a PDF, download a CSV, copy a plain-text summary, or share one week as a link.
Worked example: a five-day week with a 30-minute lunch
You work Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with an unpaid 30-minute lunch, and earn $20.00 an hour. Each day is 9 hours on the clock minus 30 minutes = 8 h 30 min, or 8.50 decimal hours.
| Line | Hours | Decimal | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday, each day | 8:30 | 8.50 | — |
| Hours worked in the week (5 × 8:30) | 42:30 | 42.50 | — |
| Regular hours (first 40) | 40:00 | 40.00 | 40 × $20.00 = $800.00 |
| Overtime (over 40) | 2:30 | 2.50 | 2.5 × $30.00 = $75.00 |
| Gross pay | $875.00 |
The overtime rate is 1.5 × $20.00 = $30.00 an hour. Under the US federal rule only the hours over 40 in the workweek earn the premium, so 2 hours 30 minutes are overtime here.
The formula
Day hours = (clock-out − clock-in) − unpaid break
Week hours = sum of the day hours
Overtime (US federal) = week hours − 40, if more than 40
Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × 1.5
All the math is done in whole minutes and only rounded when shown, so 7 hours 45 minutes is shown as 7:45 or 7.75, never as an approximate 7.7499. See how we calculate for every rule.
Edge cases it handles
- Overnight shifts: 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 8:30. The shift belongs to the day it started.
- Split shifts: 6:00 AM–10:00 AM and 4:00 PM–8:30 PM add up to 8:30 for the day.
- Paid and unpaid breaks: only enter unpaid breaks. Under federal rules, short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are paid work time, while a bona fide meal break of 30 minutes or more, with no work, is usually unpaid. The lunch break calculator explains more.
- Rounding: if your employer rounds punches to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes, turn on rounding in Settings so your card matches theirs.
- PTO, holidays and sick days: these add to paid hours but not to hours worked, so they do not push you into overtime under the federal rule.
- Mistakes: a missing clock-out, overlapping punches, a break longer than the shift or a shift over 24 hours is flagged next to the field. That day counts as 0 until you fix it.
Your time card stays on this device
There is no account. Your entries, profiles and settings are saved only in this browser, and the monthly calendar and yearly overview use the same entries, so you type each day once. You can keep up to 10 profiles, for example one per job, each with its own rate and overtime rule. A share link puts one week's data inside the link itself, so treat it like the card.
Prefer overtime first? Use the overtime calculator. Paid every two weeks? Try the biweekly time card. For the federal rules behind the numbers, read FLSA overtime rules explained.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours on a time card?
For each day, subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid break. Add the days together for the week. For example, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 9 hours; minus a 30-minute lunch that is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.50 decimal hours.
Does the calculator subtract lunch automatically?
Only the break you enter is subtracted. Type the unpaid lunch in minutes in the “Unpaid break” box for that day. Leave it empty if your break is paid.
How is overtime worked out?
With the default US federal rule, hours worked over 40 in the workweek are overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate. You can switch to no overtime, daily over 8 plus weekly over 40, California rules or your own thresholds in Settings.
Can I enter a night shift that ends after midnight?
Yes. If the clock-out time is the same as or earlier than the clock-in time, the calculator treats it as the next day and credits the whole shift to the day it started.
Can I clock in and out more than once a day?
Yes. Use “Add punch” to enter up to 6 in/out pairs per day, for example a split shift or an unpaid gap in the middle of the day.
Is my time card saved?
Yes, automatically, but only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server. Use “Download backup” to keep a copy, because clearing your browser data deletes it.
Can I print or save the time card as a PDF?
Yes. “Print” makes a clean sheet with your name, the period, each day, the totals and signature lines for you and a supervisor. To get a PDF, choose “Save as PDF” as the printer.
Does it work out taxes or take-home pay?
No. It shows gross pay only (regular, overtime and double-time pay added together) as an estimate. It does not calculate taxes, withholding or net pay.
