Ways to use a 15 minute timer

Fifteen minutes is the length of the classic Pomodoro long break, and plenty of people use it as a nap: lie down, start brown noise at a low volume, and let the chime wake you before you sink into deep sleep. If you wake up groggy, try a shorter nap next time.

At work, a 15-minute stand-up with a timer on the shared screen keeps everyone honest; when the ring is nearly empty, the remaining updates get shorter. Teachers use the same length for group work, and readers for a short sprint through a chapter on a busy day.

What you can do in 15 minutes

For group work in school, the classroom timer labels the preset so pupils know what the 15 minutes are for. If you nap with sound, set the volume low enough that the chime is clearly louder than the noise; Test alarm in Timer settings lets you check that.

Make the most of 15 minutes

Fifteen minutes works best with a firm start. For a nap, get comfortable first and only then press Start, so the whole quarter-hour counts. For a meeting, share an agenda of three items and give each one about five minutes; when the ring is a third empty, move on. Readers can set a page target, say ten pages, and see how close they get; over a week it becomes an easy way to finish a book. If you use it as your long Pomodoro break, step right away from work: make a proper drink, chat to someone, or get some fresh air, and come back to a fresh cycle.

How this timer works

Press Start or Space to begin and again to pause. R resets, F opens fullscreen, M mutes sounds and ? lists every shortcut. Change the minutes box to adjust the length. The line under the timer shows the clock time it will end. Sounds play only after you switch them on, and they fade out when time is up. Want breaks after this? Continue as a Pomodoro cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Is 15 minutes good for a power nap?

Many people find a nap of 10 to 20 minutes refreshing without leaving them groggy. Everyone is different, so adjust the minutes if you wake up feeling worse.

Can I hear the alarm over the background sound?

Set the alarm volume in Timer settings and use Test alarm. The chime plays on top of any sounds, which then fade out.

How do I run a 15 minute meeting with this?

Share your screen or put the timer in fullscreen on the meeting room display and press Start. The end time is shown so everyone knows when you will finish.

Can I pause the timer?

Yes. Press the button again or Space to pause, and once more to resume. The remaining time doesn’t change while paused.

Is 15 minutes the Pomodoro long break?

It is the default long break in this timer and falls within the 15 to 30 minutes Cirillo’s method suggests after four Pomodoros.
