Why December 25?
The Bible does not give a date for the birth of Jesus. The earliest surviving record of Christmas on December 25 is a Roman almanac, the Chronography of 354, which lists the date for the year 336. Historians still debate why that date was chosen: one theory links it to Roman midwinter festivals, another to early Christian calculations that started from March 25.
Many Orthodox churches keep the older Julian calendar, now 13 days behind the Gregorian one, so their Christmas falls on January 7. December is festive for other traditions too, including Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.
