Where Halloween comes from
Halloween grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest, and the Christian feast of All Hallows’ Eve on October 31. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many of its customs to North America in the nineteenth century, where trick-or-treating became widespread in the twentieth century. Carved turnips came before pumpkins.
